Lawson
                    James
Lawson is my great grandfather he was born in 1829 in Six
Mile Bridge, County Clare, Ireland. His parents were Patrick
Lawson and Winifred Collins. James arrived in NSW on the
"David McIver" in 1852. He went to the Bendigo
goldfields which were then being opened, James mined there
for 3 years, from there he went to Taradale where he worked
for 3 years also. He was successful in both places and made
a considerable sum of money. He then revisited his native
country, where he remained for a few years. During his visit
to Ireland he got married to Ellen Foley and in 1860 returned
on the "Champion of the Seas" to his adopted land
and settled near Macedon Victoria, where he remained engaged
in farming up until his death.
                    James
was of a quiet and retiring disposition and never took an
active part in public affairs, but the integrity of his
character was recognised by all who knew him. A devout catholic
he use to read "The Catholic Advocate" and would
say "this is the paper that gives the Protestants the
                      divil".
